Why it matters

A reel rarely fails because the actor can’t act

It fails because the best moment is buried. Casting directors, agents and managers watch a lot of reels, and published advice from their side of the table keeps making the same point: the opening seconds matter most.

Our editing

What makes our editing different

Better decisions, not more effects. These five rules shape every reel we cut.

  1. We open on you

The first shot should make it obvious whose reel this is. We look for a moment where you’re clearly on screen, doing something specific, at the center of the scene. Then we start there, even if it isn’t your biggest credit.

  2. We cut each scene to its moment

Most scenes have a turn: a decision, a reveal, a reaction that changes things. We trim the setup around it so the viewer gets there quickly. A two-minute scene can often become 30 seconds without losing what made it good.

  3. We keep scene partners only where they help you

You need someone to react to, but you don’t need their whole speech. We shorten a partner’s lines and hide the cuts on your reactions, so the scene still plays naturally.

  4. We make every line easy to hear

Footage from different productions rarely matches. We even out dialogue levels between clips and correct obvious color problems, so the viewer notices your performance, not the jumps between scenes.

  5. We stop when the reel stops getting better

We add scenes only while each one shows something new. If your strongest footage adds up to 60 seconds, we’ll tell you that a sharp 60-second reel will serve you better than a padded two-minute one.

  6. Before we cut, we tell you which scenes we’d lead with, which we’d leave out, and why.

Sometimes that means advising against a clip you’re proud of. You make the final call; it’s your reel.

The process

How a project works

Everything happens online, for actors anywhere in the United States. File formats and timelines are on how demo reel editing works.

  1. Tell us what you have. Share links to your footage and say what the reel is for: casting profiles, agent submissions or your website. Start your reel
  2. Get a recommendation. We’ll reply with the package that fits and an honest read on what your footage can support.
  3. We cut the first version. Strongest moment first, tight scenes, even sound, delivered within 5 business days.
  4. You send notes. Plain-language notes are perfect. Your package includes two rounds of revisions.
  5. You receive your files, ready to upload to casting sites and share with your representation.

A demo reel often gets only a few seconds of a casting director's attention, and many actors have good work buried behind slow openings, long setups or uneven sound. We edit demo reels to fix exactly that: put your best moment first, keep every scene about you, and let your work speak for itself.

Questions

Questions actors ask before hiring a demo reel editor

How long will my demo reel be?

As long as your strongest footage allows. For many actors that’s roughly one to two minutes, but we decide after seeing your material. Our guide explains how long an actor’s reel should be in different situations.

Can you use self-tapes in my acting reel?

Yes. Self-tapes are common on reels, especially early in a career. Scenes with a reader usually work better than monologues, and we’ll tell you if a particular tape is working against you.

What if I don’t have much footage yet?

That’s a common place to start. One or two strong scenes can make a short reel or a set of clips, and sometimes the honest advice is to wait for better material. Our guide to making a demo reel with no experience covers every realistic option, including the free ones.

Do I need to live in Los Angeles or New York?

No. Everything happens online, and we work with actors anywhere in the United States.

Do you shoot new scenes?

No. We only edit footage you already have, and we never relabel self-produced scenes as if they came from real productions.

Can you guarantee auditions or representation?

No editor can, and we won’t pretend to. What we promise is a reel that shows your work clearly and honestly.

Is a demo reel the same as a showreel?

Yes. “Showreel” is more common in the UK and Australia, while US actors and casting sites usually say “demo reel” or “acting reel.” Despite our name, we use whichever word you do.

Who edits my reel?

Anas Sheraz: more than 15 years of experience as a video editor. Read more on our about page.

Will you post my reel as a sample?

Only with your separate written permission, which you can withdraw at any time. See our footage rights policy.
